Roughly 46% of new code is now generated rather than typed. Among US developers, 92% use AI coding tools every day. Vibe coding won, and I do not remember anyone voting.
Scroll the comment sections for ten minutes and you meet both halves at once. A thoracic surgeon picked up Claude Code and, across 67 autonomous sessions, shipped a full-stack platform of their own, giddy and a little in disbelief. A million-view video is titled “I’m done coding with AI”. I scroll past both in the same feed, depending on the week, and I recognise each one.
The filter moved. “Can you code?” stopped being the question people ask. What they ask now is whether you have taste: knowing what to build, what to reject, and spotting the moment an agent is confidently, beautifully wrong. Gartner thinks 60% of new code will be AI-generated before the year is out, which puts a premium on the part typing never supplied.
I am not grieving the craft or celebrating its funeral. I just read the plausible-looking function a lot more carefully now.
The interesting skill left over is judgment: what to build, what to delete, and catching the agent when it is wrong.
